Britain has more ancient and veteran trees than almost any other country. As well as being interesting in their own right these often have enormous ecological, historic and cultural value. This is frequently because of attributes, such as deadwood, decay and cavities, that would be seen as defects in other circumstances.

It is essential that such trees are managed carefully and sensitively, often using very different techniques from those employed on younger ones.
